Since the first discovery of a luminescent cockroach in 1999, more than a dozen species have, pardon the pun, come to light. All are rare and, interestingly, so far only found in remote areas far from light pollution. The latest addition to this growing list is L. luckae that may be endangered or possibly already extinct. It is known from a single specimen collected 70 years ago from an area recently heavily impacted by the eruption of the Tungurahua volcano. The species may be most remarkable because the size and placement of its lamps suggest that it is using light to mimic toxic luminescent click beetles.

Country: Ecuador

Reference:
Vrsansky, P., Chorvat, D., Fritzsche, I., Hain, M., and R,. Sevcik. 2012. Light-mimicking cockroaches indicate Tertiarty origin of recent terrestrial luminescence.

ATTENTION FELLOW US NORTHEAST FOLLOWERS!

The Brood II Cicadas will be emerging very soon. If you don’t know about these guys, these guys are the 17 year cicadas which grow in the ground until 17 years passes and they emerge to change into adult and mate.

You can see the Brood II range below to see if you are in the areas.

These cicada do not bite and sting! At most it will be an inconvenience since they will be quite literally everywhere and might give you trouble when trying to sleep. Please do not try to use pesticides on them, they will not be needed and will not stop them.

Please spread this around so all our fellow Northeastern followers know before the swarm happens!

I’m sad they not in my area. They will be north, south and east of me. I have a cicada cook book and I have been die to try some of the recipes out. If anyone wants a copy of the cook book let me know, and I’lI email to you.

lovelyinsects:

The bloodwood tree(Pterocarpus angolensis) is a deciduous, spreading and slightly flat-crowned tree with a high canopy. It reaches about 15 metres in height and has dark bark. The bloodwood grows warm, areas in the northeast of the Africa, extending into Zimbabwe, northern Botswana, Mozambique and Namibia. The red sap is used traditionally as a dye and in some areas mixed with animal fat to make a cosmetic for faces and bodies. It is also believed to have magical properties for the curing of problems concerning blood, apparently because of its close resemblance to blood.

Also known as the Ninja slug, the long-tailed slug is a species of semi-slug found only in the state of Sabah in Borneo. Like other semi-slugs the long-tailed slug has a partially visible shell, but it is too small to withdraw into like a snails shell. Like the other members of the genus this gastropod has a long tail which it reportedly wraps around its body when at rest. This slug also uses ‘love darts’ for reproduction.
